The race is getting intense, as the teams hit the Bering Sea
Coast, for the final leg to Nome. This race has been intensely cold, with
numerous mushers suffering. The dogs, however, perform better in the cold, and
the hard trail sets up for fast runs.
Aaron Burmeister was the first team to Unalakleet on the
coast. Dallas Seavey passed him and was the first in and out of Shaktoolik,
heading across the frozen bay towards Koyuk, with Aaron leapfrogging him. Aliy
Zirkle, Jessie Royer, Mitch Seavey, Joar Ulsom and Jeff King are in pursuit.
The leading rookie is Jason Campeau, heading to Shaktoolik.
The back of the pack are all out of Huslia, with the
exception of Cindy Abbott and Jan Steves.
Seven teams are out of the race.
