It was a sprint to the finish ... Hugh Neff crossed the line first, followed closely by Allen Moore!

The second half is under way!
Earlier this afternoon, the Yukon Quest restarted in Dawson City. Allen Moore left the checkpoint 19 minutes ahead of Lance Mackey. The rest of the top five, Hugh, Jake and Brent are all on the trail. It’s shaping up to be an exciting run to the finish!

The rest of the field is in Dawson on their 36 hour break, with the exception of Marcelle Fressineau and Michael Telpin, who are still on their way in.

Yukon Quest Update #4

And they’re off!
Hugh Neff leads Brent Sass out of Circle City, as the lead pack heads to the Yukon River. The river is always different and can present many challenges, from jumbled ice, open water and whiteout conditions. The next checkpoint, Eagle, is 160+ miles away, so it will be a long run. Allen Moore and Sonny Lindner followed about an hour later.

Misha Pedersen spent a long time on Eagle Summit recovering a lost dog, but she has finally made it to Central.

Mushing Race Sesson Begins!

In Alaska, the Montana Creek Dog Mushers Association is hoping to kick off their sprint season this weekend. According to their website, "The trail is in decent, but not perfect, early season shape...the chances for racing two days are very positive."

In Wisconsin, the Can't Depend on Snow annual benefit event also takes place this weekend.

Stay tuned, as things begin to heat up in the mushing world!

Iditarod '11 Update 6 - In Iditarod

Trent Herbst and Kelley Griffin have reached the halfway point to the ghost town of Iditarod, with Trent winning the GCI Dorothy Page Halfway Award . Cim Smyth is nearly there. The trio will likely take their 24 there.

Martin Buser is the furthest down the trail AFTER taking his 24, and so should soon be the “leader”. However, after this years’ Yukon Quest, we should all know that “It isn’t over ‘til it’s over.”

The bulk of the pack has or is finishing their 24s in Takotna and are blowing through Ophir, heading to Iditarod.

Mitch Seavey severely cut his hand in Ophir and was withdrawn by race officials.

The back of the pack are all out of Nikolai, with exception of James Bardoner, who is on the way there.

Iditarod '11 Update 4 - When to 24?

The top third of the field is in Takotna. Martin Buser, who also won the Spirit of Alaska award for being the first to McGrath, was the first in, followed by Lance about an hour and a half later. They’ve been resting 6 hours, so some teams will certainly take their 24 there. Time will tell if a musher will run farther to Ophir, or even try the move that Lance used in ’09 and run straight through to Iditarod, leaving the field behind.

In the Rookie Race, Nicolas Petit is in front, into McGrath. Mike Santos, Justin Savidis, Cain Carter, Kelly Maixner, Jodi Bailey and Magnus Kaltenbrn in Nikolai.

The back of the pack is primarily in Rohn, with James Bardoner on the way and Bob Story still reported to be in Rainy Pass.

Paul Gebhardt and Jessica Hendricks scratched in Nikolai.

Iditarod '11 Update 2 - Up the Pass

Front-runners are parked at the Rainy Pass checkpoint

Lance, Ray, Hugh, Sebastian and Paul are all stopped at mile 136.

Jodi Bailey and a large pack are stopped at the Finger Lake checkpoint.

James Bardoner appears to be leaving Skwentna, leaving Tom Thurston and Kris Hoffman as the last place teams.

There have been no reported scratches at this point. There is a LOT of race to go!

IDITAROD HISTORY IN THE MAKING

Rookie Musher To Run Iditarod After Successful Yukon Quest

ALASKA (March 2, 2011) – How does it feel to have traveled one thousand miles on the runners of a dog sled? “I was not ready for it to end, after days of quality time alone with my dogs, all of a sudden you will be back to your regular life. I just did not want the trail time to end!” explains musher Jodi Bailey. She will soon be back on the runners, in an attempt to become the first person to run both the thousand-mile Yukon Quest and the iconic 1,049 mile Iditarod in the same year – as a rookie. “That kind of distance is probably hard for people to wrap their imaginations around. I try not to focus on the whole big challenge, instead I worry about the dogs in front of me, that is much more manageable.”

After finishing the Yukon Quest in 7^th place, during what was one of the toughest races in recent history – twelve of the twenty-five mushers to start scratched or were withdrawn – Bailey, 42 was just two weeks away from the next big challenge - the Iditarod.

“They are 2 completely different races, and having finished one is no guarantee for the other. You learn something in every race, and that always helps. But bottom line, you don't know the Quest or the Iditarod until you run them.”

Four-time Iditarod Champion Lance Mackey had shattered the idea that a musher could not just do well in both races the same year, but that they could win both. For a rookie, the learning curve is steep, mastering the challenge of maintaining a healthy dog team, while learning the minutia of details involved in successfully traveling long distance by sled. “My first checkpoint, I had a total ‘gear explosion’ with everything coming out of the sled, but by the end I was more organized and able to get through my checkpoint routine without as much fuss. Which was a good thing because as you get more tired it is harder and harder to focus.”

Weather and trail conditions are always a factor in these races, and the successful musher has to be prepared for anything. “Over 1000 miles and 12 days you see everything. It went from perfect conditions to blowing snow and plummeting temperatures. Then there were also beautiful days, clear skies and a full moon near the end. Plus, some beautiful northern lights.”

Yukon Quest Update #21

Red Lantern

Hank DeBruin takes the Red Lantern in 13 days, 10 hours and 54 minutes, ending the 2011 Yukon Quest.

Earlier in the day, Tamara Rose, Kyla Durham and Jerry Joinson arrived in Fairbanks.

At the Banquet, the awards were given. A new award was created this year to honor the dogs that exhibit strong character and perseverance out on the trail. The award is named after its first recipient. Silver, from Brent Sass’ team. In 2006, during a storm on Eagle Summit, Silver was instrumental in assisting a musher in trouble and another team to get over the summit. Again, this year, Silver was key for Brent in getting his team and Hans Gatt’s over American summit outside the city of Eagle. The Silver Legacy Award will be given to honor future canines for their incredible deeds and feats of bravery and honor.

The Golden Harness Award went to Dallas Seavey’s dogs Diesel and Chung.

The Dawson City Award went to Ken Anderson.

The Rookie of the Year went to the 2011 Yukon Quest Champion Dallas Seavey.

The Challenge of the North award is presented to the musher who most exemplified the Spirit of the Yukon Quest, went to Kelley Griffin.

The Veterinarian’s Choice Award for best dog care went to Mike Ellis.

The Sportsmanship Award is presented to the musher who demonstrates sportsmanship along the trail as selected by their fellow mushers. This year, there was a three-way tie in the musher voting which race officials chose not to break. Instead, they issued the Award to all three mushers: Mike Ellis, Allen Moore and Brent Sass. The three mushers each conveyed the same message – that this year, the award could have gone to each and every musher, because everyone was out there helping each other.

Dallas, also taking Rookie-of-the-Year, crossed the finish line 33 minutes before Sebastian Schnuelle. Ken Anderson finished 3^rd. Brent is on his way in.

Race On!
Dallas Seavey left the mandatory 8 hour stop at Two Rivers, with Ken Anderson leaving 13 minutes behind, for the 75 mile race to the finish. Sebastian will leave a half-hour later. Hard to predict, but it could take anywhere from 8 to 10 hours to get to Fairbanks.
Kelley is on the trail out of 101, with Allen still resting there.Jodi and Dave are out of Circle, heading towards the overflow on the way to Central. Mike is behind them.Tamara, Johannes, Jerry, Kyla and Hank have left Slavin’s.

Yukon Quest Update #14

What a Race!

What a day on the trail! First, the Yukon Quest - Official Site reported on an area of severe overflow about 20 miles from Central. Hans Gatt was struggling in waist-deep water, trying to get his dogs and sled out, when Sebastian came upon him. Seb helped Hans get his sled out of the water, then get to some shelter and dry off. Eventually, both mushers made it to Central, where Hans eventually scratched, due to severe frostbite. Dallas came in so covered in ice, he couldn’t get his boots off.

Hugh seems to have been struggling up Eagle summit – we won’t know for sure until his tracker updates or he makes it in to the Mile 101 checkpoint.

Dan Kaduce is the next musher out of Central, having great runs put him into this position. Sebastian will likely be close behind. If there’s trouble on the mountain, this thing is FAR from being decided!
