Iditarod '11 Update 16 - MUSHING HISTORY MADE TODAY

ROOKIE MUSHER MAKES HISTORY
First Rookie To Complete The Yukon Quest And Iditarod In Same Year

ALASKA (March 17, 2011) – After more than two thousand miles and 24 days behind a dog team, Jodi Bailey has set a new mushing record – she becomes the first musher to successfully run both long-distance sled dog races, the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod, in the same year, as a rookie.

There are numerous challenges to the rookies - managing the team, caring for the dogs and taking care of themselves. But through it all, Jodi has maintained her smile and sense of humor. “It’s not how many times you fall, it’s how many times you smile and get back up,” she commented an Iditarod Insider video clip, after crashing on the final of three Happy River Steps.

After Lance Mackey won his first Iditarod title in the same year as winning the Yukon Quest, a “double” run has become a bit less unusual. Nonetheless, only eighteen other women have run both races, and only one, Kelley Griffin, has done them both in the same year. No musher in history has run them both successfully in the same year on their first try.

While this years’ Yukon Quest will go down as one of the toughest in history, the Iditarod has had gentler weather. Still, the running of one doesn’t totally prepare you for the other. “I have had to really study both races in order to make race plans for each that are hopefully realistic and will allow me to reach my goal of completing both with happy, healthy dogs,” she said before the Quest.

For Jodi, and her husband and kennel partner Dan Kaduce, dog mushing is much more than a race – it is a labor of love. “I love my dogs dearly,” she stated, “and to be able to go out and travel long distances with them, through some of the most beautiful country on earth, is an honor.”

For the pair and their dogs, the journey begins long before they step onto the runners. “It has been both fun and humbling to see how people have really been willing to encourage and support me in this dream. I have met some wonderful people, who are just great fans of mushing, or are interested in the marathon dog races, and have wanted to be a part of this dream. Each sponsor we have is really a part of our team, making this great adventure happen, and we are very thankful for all of them.”

Jodi and Dan maintain Dew Claw Kennel outside Chatanika, Alaska with their numerous Alaskan Huskies, and may be contacted at at www.dewclawkennel.com

Iditarod '11 Update 15 - They Keep Coming In

Half the field has passed under the burled arch.

As the teams keep coming in, rookie Nicolas Petit left White Mountain over 5 hours ahead of Kelly Maixner, with Rookie of the Year seemingly locked up.

Jodi Bailey is taking her final 8 hour rest, she is 77 miles away from making history by being the only musher to complete BOTH the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod in the same year as a rookie.

Magnus Kaltenbrn is in Elim, with Justin Savidis and Cain Carter on the way. Scott Janssen is in Shaktoolik, with Angie Taggart are on the trail to Unalakleet.

Ellen Halverson is in Unalakleet, in Red Lantern position.

77 miles to history

It’s a sprint race to Nome! John Baker left White Mountain exactly 50 minutes before Ramey Smyth. Ramey has always made the run faster than John. We should have a winner around 12 Noon Eastern Time.

Iditarod '11 Update 6 - In Iditarod

Trent Herbst and Kelley Griffin have reached the halfway point to the ghost town of Iditarod, with Trent winning the GCI Dorothy Page Halfway Award . Cim Smyth is nearly there. The trio will likely take their 24 there.

Martin Buser is the furthest down the trail AFTER taking his 24, and so should soon be the “leader”. However, after this years’ Yukon Quest, we should all know that “It isn’t over ‘til it’s over.”

The bulk of the pack has or is finishing their 24s in Takotna and are blowing through Ophir, heading to Iditarod.

Mitch Seavey severely cut his hand in Ophir and was withdrawn by race officials.

The back of the pack are all out of Nikolai, with exception of James Bardoner, who is on the way there.

Iditarod '11 Update 5 - Who's In First?

Robert Nelson, Trent Herbst, Cim Smyth and Kelley Griffin are technically in the front positions at Ophir, however, when Martin, Lance, Sebastian, Hugh, Ray, Mitch, Robert, Hans and Dallas take off, they will take over as the top 4 take their 24.

The next 20 or so teams are also in Takotna.

In the Rookie Race, Nicolas Petit, Mike Santos, Justin Savidis, Jodi Bailey are in Takotna. Magnus Kaltenbrn on his way. Kelly Maixner and Cain Carter are in McGrath. Angie Taggart is in Nikolai. Kris Hoffman, Brennan Norden and Scott Janssen are on the way, with James Bardoner on the way to Rohn.

Gerry Willomitzer scratched in McGrath and Bob Story in Rainy Pass.

Iditarod '11 Update 4 - When to 24?

The top third of the field is in Takotna. Martin Buser, who also won the Spirit of Alaska award for being the first to McGrath, was the first in, followed by Lance about an hour and a half later. They’ve been resting 6 hours, so some teams will certainly take their 24 there. Time will tell if a musher will run farther to Ophir, or even try the move that Lance used in ’09 and run straight through to Iditarod, leaving the field behind.

In the Rookie Race, Nicolas Petit is in front, into McGrath. Mike Santos, Justin Savidis, Cain Carter, Kelly Maixner, Jodi Bailey and Magnus Kaltenbrn in Nikolai.

The back of the pack is primarily in Rohn, with James Bardoner on the way and Bob Story still reported to be in Rainy Pass.

Paul Gebhardt and Jessica Hendricks scratched in Nikolai.
